Chinese Tui Na

Tui Na dates back to the Shang Dynasty in China around 1700 B.C. Records show that it was often used to diagnose and treat childhood diseases along with adult digestive issues. Tui Na flourished throughout China until it was all but outlawed by the Qing Dynasty along with some other Chinese arts. Eventually it was restored and today is taught as a separate but equal method of study in Chinese medical colleges. Just like acupuncture, which focuses on bringing the body back into balance, Tui Na is a hands-on treatment that uses acupressure to achieve maximum results. It is a form of Chinese manipulative therapy and is often used alongside acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping and several other Chinese modalities.

Tui Na, which literally means "push and grasp", is an external method of treatment and was traditionally used mostly on the elderly and infants. Now it is used in specialized treatments in many different areas such as cosmetology, orthopedics, sports medicine, etc. It also has fewer side effects than Western medicine, which is based more on drugs and chemicals in their treatment efforts. Tui Na can be used alone or in conjunction with other methods of treatment to treat conditions mainly dealing with musculo-skeletal issues and chronic conditions, but also many non-musculoskeletal problems as well.

What this technique uses is basically a sequence tapping and kneading in order to help remove blockages in the meridians and stimulate Qi and blood flow in the body. Doing this promotes healing in the same way that other TCM modalities do. The techniques of Tui Na can range from light to deep tissue massaging where practitioners often use herbal compresses and packs to help in healing, especially on patients with sensitive skin. The ultimate goal of the Tui Na practitioner is to help the patient achieve adequate Qi energy flow throughout their body. When accompanied with massage and other TCM techniques, the main purpose of Tui Na is to establish Qi and increase the body's ability to heal itself.

In preparing for a Tui Na session, because there are no oils or devices used, all that is required is that loose clothing be worn. It is also not recommended that a patient arrive either too hungry or too full. Make sure to have at least a light snack before having the procedure. This is not due to any risk of injury during the process, but more to the comfort of the patients themselves. The necessity of treatment will depend on the patient and their particular needs. If the problem is acute then one to three sessions as soon as possible should be enough to remedy the pain. If there is a chronic issue, then it is suggested that treatments be maintained on a weekly, bi-monthly or monthly basis in order to achieve maximum results. Like with other TCM modalities, Tui Na is another way to manage acute and chronic health concerns. But, if simple health maintenance is of interest, then it is useful there as well. Tui Na is an excellent way to receive preventative treatment for those who prefer a more holistic approach to wellness and healing.
