Chi Gung![]() If improved vitality, health mental stability and spiritual awareness are important to you, then Chi gung is what you have been looking for. Chi gung, which is the English version of Qigong, is the art of developing all those things and more. The technique uses breathing and slow, methodical body movements to develop chi, thereby improving your health. Often confused with the art of tai chi, Qigong uses slower body movements and places more emphasis on developing the "chi". It is the basic building foundation for energy arts like tai chi and martial arts. There are also over 10,000 varieties of chi gung with roughly 200 million people who practice it. Some of the reasons include gaining strength, improved health or even to reverse the effects of a disease. Still others practice chi gung to improve working with chi in order to become a healer or to become more connected with nature and the universe. Chi gung or Qigong is broken down into two parts. The qi means air and gong means discipline or skill. Therefore, qigong literally translates into breath or energy skill. The acceptance of this art varies on a scientific basis. Many medical practitioners in the Western world and of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) believe that chi gung is breathing and exercise that could improve your health. Other practitioners believe that qi is actually a physical vibration that circulates through meridians in the body. Numerous people have claimed an immediate reduction of pain through chi gung. Chi gung is often associated with spirituality because of its relation to Chinese martial arts and TCM. It was originally practiced in Taoist and Buddhist temples as a means of focusing concentration and it was also used in martial arts training. Some forms of Chi gung teaches that humanity and spirituality are one in the same and any ideas to the contrary is considered to be a limited view on the value of human life. This philosophy states that by cultivating your virtue, it is possible to have access to higher energy and thus, improved health. Cultivating ones virtue can be described as the process of realizing that we are always one with the universe. This is possible through deep relaxation and that can be achieved through chi gung. There are basically three aspects in all types of chi gung, which are form, mind and energy and we need all three to work in conjunction to be complete. If you practice form without mind and energy, then you are simply exercising and not receiving any energy training. In order to effectively control your energy, it is said that you must enter what is called a "chi gung state of mind". However, in the past this was called a "Zen" state. When you are in a "Zen" state of mind, you can tap into the cosmic energy and direct energy to flow anywhere throughout your body. It is this aspect of chi gung more so than the energy aspect that allows chi gung masters to perform what some may see as miracles, depending on their beliefs.
